About the Department
The Department of Interventional Radiology (IR) in AVBRH is a state-of-the-art facility offering minimally invasive image-guided procedures for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Equipped with cutting-edge Biplane Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) Suites, Advanced CT & MRI-guided Intervention Labs, and Hybrid Operating Rooms, the department specializes in vascular and non-vascular interventions.
Key procedures include Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE), Radiofrequency & Microwave Ablation (RFA/MWA), Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), Percutaneous Nephrostomy (PCN), Biliary Interventions, and Neurointerventional Procedures like Mechanical Thrombectomy for Stroke.
The department plays a crucial role in oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, and trauma management, offering life-saving emergency interventions such as embolization for GI bleeding, trauma-related vascular injuries, and acute stroke therapy.
As a pioneer in interventional radiology research, the department has contributed to over 1000 publications in leading journals like JVIR, CVIR, and Radiology, and actively participates in multi-center clinical trials and research funded by ICMR & DBT. With a dedicated team of expert interventional radiologists, the department continues to lead in innovation, education, and cutting-edge patient care, positioning itself as a center of excellence in minimally invasive therapies.

Comprehensive Range of Services
Providing diverse services like angioplasty, biopsy, embolization, tumour ablation, and catheter-directed therapies that other specialties might not offer in one department. The spectrum of this endovascular interventional radiology varied from head to toe .It has evolved into subspecialties like
- Neurointervention sciences to treat intracranial aneurysm, stroke, AVM and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
- Peripheral interventions: Arterial angioplasties were performed to treat gangrene, diabetic foot and leg pain.
- Venous interventions: to treat Deep vein thrombosis for relieving leg swelling, endogenous laser /thermal /glue ablation for treating varicose veins and venous ulcer
- Oncointerventions: Nonsurgical curative / palliative treatment of liver tumor, lung tumor, bone tumor, kidney tumor, fibroid and thyroid tumor.
- Embolization interventions: Uterine artery embolization to treat uterine fibroid. It provides lifesaving option for nasal bleeding, hemoptysis, and GI bleed.
- Non vascular interventions: to treat jaundice, liver abscess, infertility.
Equipment (High End)
- RF (Radiofrequency) for Varicose Veins – Pain Management
- Penumbra System for Stroke Management.
- IVUS (Intravascular Ultrasound) for Venous Disease Management
- Philips Azurion 5 M Flat panel
